What Should I Look for When Buying a Gun Safe?

4th Jun 2021

As a secure storage unit for your valuables, you want to make sure that when buying a gun safe, it's the right one for your firearms. Gun safes aren't cheap, but then neither are your guns.

Investing in a safe will act as a long-term solution to safely and securely store your collection of firearms.

You will come across a large amount of these heavy metal vaults on the internet and offline. There are so many to choose from that it can make selecting the right one difficult.

There also isn't a one-size-fits-all approach with gun safes, so choosing the right one for you requires a bit of background knowledge and attention to detail.

Read on for some features you will want to look for if you're searching for a trustworthy and durable gun safe.

Security Features

As a piece of equipment that is solely for the purpose of security, it makes sense that looking at the security features of a gun safe before you buy is top of the list.

  • Anti-pry tabs: Located on the inside of a safe door, anti-pry tabs help to prevent any attempt by intruders or unwanted persons to wedge open a safe door.
  • Shear pins: These work to minimise the amount of force that can be applied to the bolt handle. If there is a large amount of force applied, the pin will break and the bolt handle will loosen, making the safe next to impossible to get into.
  • Hard plate: These prevent any drill attacks. You will find a number of these on the inside and outside of the safe door and in the locking mechanism.
  • Relockers: These work to permanently put the safe's bolt out of use if any tampering is detected.

Warranty

Like with anything valuable you buy, it's always best to ensure it has some kind of warranty.

A warranty will cover you if the craftsmanship of the vault is poor, the safe is damaged following an attempted or actual break-in and for fire damage.

Sizing and Dimensions

It sounds like an obvious one, but this is a factor that requires some thought and attention. Ensure you know the size that you require for your guns as you don't want to buy a safe that is too small.

It's also worth considering whether you will be buying more guns in the future so your new safe can also accommodate these.

Fire Rating

You can never be sure when a fire might occur, especially if you live in an area of Australia prone to bush fires.

There are different ratings that are designed to withhold a certain amount of heat. It's important to do your research on the rating that you feel will suit your requirements and go off that.
