Product Description
Format DL12 Gun Safe (195kg)
Format DL12 Gun Safe - 12 Gun Capacity, UL RSC Rated, 60 Min Fire Rating, 195kg
The Format DL12 is the entry-level model in the Format DL Series gun safe range, designed for the storage of up to 12 long arms. Rated to the Underwriters Laboratories (UL) Residential Security Container (RSC) standard, the DL12 is constructed from 12-gauge (2.7mm) steel and fitted with a UL Listed Sargent and Greenleaf (S&G) lock, available in either mechanical or electronic configuration.
The DL12 provides a 60-minute fire rating at 649°C and a $50,000 cash rating. Security features include three hardened steel door plates for drill-attack protection, an anti-pry tab, and a 5-spoke carbon fibre handle. The interior is fitted with adjustable gun racks and shelves lined in suede with leather trim. At 195kg and 1498mm tall, the DL12 suits residential firearms storage where a compact-width safe is required.
America and guns. It's... a relationship. With an estimated 400 million firearms in private hands - more guns than people - if there's one thing Americans have genuinely mastered, it's storing them safely.
Format USA has been engineering gun safes in the United States for over 30 years. Every DL Series safe carries independent UL certification - tested, not just claimed. When it comes to gun safe design, we'll happily defer to the people with this much practice.
All Format DL Series safes exceed 150kg, which means floor anchoring is not required under Queensland legislation for Licence Categories A, B, and C.

Available Finish Options
Black
Finish does not affect security rating, fire rating, or performance.
Fire Rating
- UL Listed fire rated for 60 minutes at 649°C.
- For best fire performance, install the safe at a lower level of the building where fire temperatures are typically lower.
- No safe is completely fireproof. If a fire reaches a sufficiently high temperature for a sustained period, damage to contents may still occur.
- Ammunition must be stored separately from other valuables. Do not store ammunition in the same compartment as documents or other heat-sensitive items.
Cash Rating
- Manufacturer's stated cash rating: $50,000.
- Cash ratings are a common reference point for insurers when assessing safe suitability. Always confirm with your insurance provider that the safe meets their specific policy requirements before purchase.

Frequently Asked Questions
- Does the Format DL12 meet Australian state firearms storage requirements?
The DL12 holds a UL RSC (Residential Security Container) rating, which is an American standard. Whether this satisfies your state or territory firearms storage obligations depends on your licence category and the specific legislation in your jurisdiction. Licence holders must confirm compliance with their relevant firearms licensing authority before purchase. Terry's Gold Coast Safes can assist with guidance - contact us directly for advice. - What is the difference between the mechanical and electronic lock options?
The mechanical lock uses a dial combination that is set and changed manually - it requires no battery and has no electronic components. The electronic lock uses a programmable 6-digit keypad code and requires a single 9V alkaline battery. Both lock types are UL Listed S&G locks. The electronic lock offers faster daily access, while the mechanical lock requires no battery management. - What does UL RSC rated mean for a gun safe?
RSC stands for Residential Security Container. It is a UL burglary resistance rating that requires the safe to resist entry by a single person using common hand tools for a minimum of 5 minutes. It is the most widely used entry-level burglary rating for residential gun safes in the United States. The RSC rating is lower than the UL TL-15 rating used on the Format TL Series. - Can I store ammunition in the DL12?
Ammunition should be stored separately from firearms and other valuables. Many Australian state firearms regulations specify how and where ammunition must be stored. Check your licence conditions and relevant state legislation for specific requirements. - Can the safe be bolted to the floor?
Yes. Bolt-down holes are pre-drilled in the base of the safe and concrete anchor bolts are supplied. Anchoring is strongly recommended to prevent removal. Ensure the safe is level before anchoring - use appropriate shims if required.
Additional Information
- RSC vs TL-15 - understanding the difference:
The UL RSC rating requires resistance to attack for a minimum of 5 minutes using hand tools. The UL TL-15 rating - used on the Format TL Series - requires a minimum of 15 minutes against a broader range of tools including power and cutting equipment. For buyers requiring a higher level of certified burglary protection, the Format TL Series should be considered. - Drill-attack protection:
The DL12 door incorporates three hardened steel plates positioned to resist drill-based attack on the locking mechanism. This is a meaningful additional layer of security beyond basic steel construction. - Lock selection:
Both mechanical and electronic lock options are UL Listed S&G locks. If selecting the electronic lock, the factory default master code of 1-2-3-4-5-6 must be changed before the safe is placed into service. Always verify the new code operates correctly with the door open before closing the safe. Four consecutive incorrect entries will lock out the keypad for 10 minutes. - Interior configuration:
The adjustable gun racks and shelving allow the interior to be reconfigured to suit different combinations of long arms and accessories. Store heavy items away from the centre of shelves to prevent sagging - the manufacturer recommends individual shelf loads be kept within safe limits. - Placement advice:
Install near a load-bearing wall. A protective barrier such as a carpet offcut, treated timber, or rubber mat between the safe and floor is recommended to prevent surface scratching, which can lead to rust. In humid environments, a desiccant pack or dehumidifier rod inside the safe is recommended to protect firearms from moisture corrosion. - Moving and installation:
At 195kg, the DL12 requires appropriate moving equipment and adequate personnel for safe relocation. A standard refrigerator dolly is not suitable. Check doorway clearances and floor load ratings before delivery. The safe door must not be removed during relocation.
