Drug Safes & Schedule 8 Storage Requirements (QLD Focus)
If you store Schedule 8 (S8) medicines, you don’t just need “a lockable cabinet” — you need an S8 safe that meets the Queensland Health Departmental Standard. This guide explains the requirements clearly and shows which safes we stock that align with them.
What Does QLD Require for an S8 Safe?
The Queensland Health Departmental Standard – Secure Storage of S8 Medicines (Version 1, 27 September 2021) sets minimum requirements for an S8 safe. :contentReference[oaicite:5]{index=5}
1️⃣ Construction Requirements
- Constructed from mild steel plate not less than 10mm thickness
- Continuous welding of joints
- Flush fitting door with clearance ≤ 1.5mm
- Fixed locking bar welded to inside face of door
- 6-lever lock fixed to rear face of door
2️⃣ The Critical Weight / Bolting Rule
Under Table 1 of the QLD Standard, the S8 safe must:
- Weigh more than 350kg OR
- Be securely attached to the premises
The glossary defines “securely attached” as: attached to a concrete floor, brick or concrete wall, or through timber studs/noggins using at least 4 bolts of at least 12mm diameter, fastened from inside the safe.
✔ It does NOT say “floor AND wall”. ✔ It is EITHER over 350kg OR securely bolted (floor OR wall as appropriate).

These units must include:
- Unique user access codes or biometrics
- Access recording & reporting
- Automatic locking
- Security alerts if opened/damaged/disconnected
Best Practice Beyond Minimum Compliance
- Install safe out of public sight
- Limit access codes to authorised staff only
- Consider dual-locking options
- Use internal organisation systems (e.g., Flowsell pull-out shelves in MS range)
- Consider monitored alarms or CCTV in higher-risk premises
